Firefighters In Pine Bluff Mad Over No Promotions

Members of the Pine Bluff Civil Service Commission got an earful Monday night when several members of the Fire and Emergency Services Department complained that although promotion lists have been established, and the department has vacancies, there have been no promotions.

Does anyone know of a FD that is planning on doing training modules 1-3 anytime soon? The AFA training schedule hasn't shown any listed for several months, but I suspect that many FDs aren't getting their courses listed there.

Pulaski County Vol. FF Sets Fires

A North Pulaski volunteer firefighter has confessed to setting two church fires. Wensday, Pulaski County deputies arrested Mearl White after he called in to report a fire at an abandoned church.

Authorities say White later confessed to setting the fire himself.

Houston F.D. Quits Over Conflict

After nearly a decade on the job Houston Fire Chief Scot Erwin resigned last week along with most of the volunteer fire fighters. Now the city has no fire company. Erwin quit in protest over the appointment of Jerry Lawson to the five member city council. Jerry's wife Anne is Houston's Secretary Treasurer and Erwin believes its a conflict of interest.

Fire Chief Placed On Suspension In Crawford County

The District 6 Fire Department chief will remain on suspension over the next six months while the board further evaluate allegations of misconduct.

The board meeting brought out raw emotion from many with the volunteer fire department, which services Crawford County. Several firefighters say the suspended chief has a history of verbally and physically abusing colleagues.

New Training Bill

A bill approved by the Arkansas House of Representatives, and in committee on the Senate side, to reduce the hours of volunteer firefighter training has the approval of area firefighters and legislators.

First Responder Refresher

I am wanting to require my first responders to take a first responder refresher from me every two years just like EMT. I think for someone to take a forty hour class ten years ago does not make them a first responder today without some refresher training. I have first responders wanting this class as well as CEU's. I do not want to reinvent the wheel if anyone has a powerpoint they are already using I would greatly appreciate it. If not I will cut down 40hr show to fit national registry refresher standards topics. Also any more mention of Arkansas requiring First Responders to be certified in the next few years?

Fire Protection Bill For Small Towns Advances

A bill to aid collection of volunteer fire department dues in smaller Arkansas towns passed the Senate 35-0 on Monday.

Senate Bill 331 by Sen. Cecile Bledsoe, R-Rogers, allows residents of small towns that do not have a fire department to vote for a requirement that local volunteer fire department dues be added to property tax bills. House sponsor Rep. Duncan Baird, R-Lowell, will present the bill in the House.

Still No EMC in Pine Bluff

The City of Pine Bluff has decided to re-open the position of Emergency Management Coordinator.

The first round of applicants went thought the interview process two weeks ago, with several highly trained and certified individuals applying. The City of Pine Bluff has not openly commented on the first round and why a decision has not been made.
